Game Play

Players, during a typical game of Acropolis, are placed in the roles of true Athenians who are competing to gain political favor and manage the affairs of the city-state. The goal is to be the most powerful amongst your competition by increasing one’s number of votes, military strength, and financial resources. At the start of each turn every player rolls two dice to determine their turn order and also establish what type of card they will draw from from a deck — action cards, resource cards, or even grants from gods! Then players can choose up to two actions such as recruiting new citizens, collecting taxes or levying troops to attack agains other opponents. There are also events on occasion that provide players with opportunities to influence other players by forcing them to take part in certain activities. Each turn strategic thinking and smart decision making is key as there can be wrathful penalties for making poor choices such as incurring debt or going without regular military drills. Ultimately at game’s end whichever player has the most votes wins and is declared leader of the city-state.
